For years, CASBS has been exploring how work is changing globally and the implications for people, governance, and political economies. This year, the pandemic has inflicted epic disruption on work and workers: Depression-level unemployment; unstable incomes for the employed, unemployed, and underemployed; looming eviction and hunger crises; and inadequate federal policy responses in the U.S. and many other parts of the world. People are suffering – more of them than ever no longer believe that their children will be better off than they ever were.

Under these conditions, we must rethink society’s bond with and support of work and workers in 2020 and beyond. What role should government play in raising living standards, creating economic security, and reshaping industrial and labor relations? How can we redesign careers and workplaces that promote organizational effectiveness, the importance of the work-family interface, the material and psychological well-being of workers, and the value and dignity of the work they undertake?

Despite the pandemic’s devastation, we have choices about where we go next. Will it be in a direction that enures a more durable, inclusive, accessible, and equitable prosperity for workers, their families, and their communities? Join Tara Behrend, Louis Hyman, John Irons, and Phyllis Moen in conversation with Margaret Levi as they consider these questions.
