CASBS summer institutes provide an opportunity for senior and junior scholars to come together for an extended, multidisciplinary interrogation of a field of research. From 1977-2010, the Mellon Foundation funded CASBS summer institutes, recognizing their importance to advancing interdisciplinary social science research. They not only had significant influence on scholarship, they also inspired new lines of research and life-long collaborations.

Beginning in 2016, CASBS revived this tradition with a summer institute on Organizations and Their Effectiveness, which is reshaping how young scholars approach organization studies.

In 2018, CASBS hosted a second summer institute as part of the Causal Inference for Social Impact Lab. The summer institute brought academics and practitioners together to improve the practice of policy evaluation by adding to the range of tools and approaches and by creating new forms of collaboration.
