Visiting Scholar year

2025-26 - Oswaldo Cruz Foundation

While at CASBS, Cristiani Vieira Machado will develop a project on global health and health policies in Latin America. Her study will explore the connections between transformations in global health governance and changes in health systems in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina over the last few decades from a comparative perspective. Through this two-level approach, she aims to understand whether and to what extent recent crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have facilitated changes in global health governance, the agendas of multilateral agencies, and the roles of Latin American states in health policies. She will also analyze how international and national variables interact to influence the state's capacity to implement public policies that reduce health inequalities.

Machado has been a professor and researcher at the Sergio Arouca National School of Public Health/Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil for over two decades and has served as vice president of Fiocruz for the last six years. Her work focuses on social protection and health, health policy analysis, comparative health policies, and health systems. She has mentored numerous master's and doctoral students and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
