2025-26 - Chinese University of Hong Kong

At CASBS, Seanon Wong will be working on two projects. First, he plans to complete his book on the microsociology of diplomacy. The book asks: What are the interpersonal mechanisms – one’s bodily and emotional cues, tone of speech, performance of speech acts and various rituals, etc. – that enable leaders to communicate when they interact in person? What do they communicate – one’s intentions, position, status, etc. – and how interpersonal (and by extension, international) (mis)understandings arise in the process? How do leaders achieve their political objectives through diplomacy? His second project examines the social psychology of state-led propaganda in both authoritarian and democratic regimes.

Wong is an associate professor of international relations (IR) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and director of its undergraduate program in Government and Public Administration. He has published in the European Journal of International Relations, Security Studies, International Theory and other leading journals in IR. He is a recipient of the Anthony Deos Young Scholar Award (2022) and the Article Award (2017) from the Diplomatic Studies Section of the International Studies Association. Wong is the CUHK-Stanford University CASBS Fellow for 2025-26.
