Wen-Chin Wu
Fellowship year
2025-26 - Academia Sinica
Wen-Chin Wu will dedicate his fellowship year to working on two projects examining the relationship between public opinion and military affairs. He will leverage comprehensive survey data from Taiwan, collected around the significant 2024 reform extending compulsory military service and increasing the defense budget. The first project will assess whether military training fosters greater patriotism, militarism, and willingness to fight against external threats. The second project will explore the determinants of public support for military policies, including the extended duration of military service and higher defense expenditures. Together, these projects aim to understand how citizens in small and medium-sized powers respond to external threats amid intensified great-power competition.
Wu is a research fellow at the Institute of Political Science, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. His research interests include political economy, comparative authoritarianism, and public opinion, with a particular focus on Chinese politics and cross-Strait relations. He has published widely in academic journals. His co-authored work in Political Communication received the 2022 Kaid-Sanders Best Political Communication Article of the Year Award from the International Communication Association. He was a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute (2019–2020).
