Mary Kate Stimmler
Practitioner year
2025-26 - University of California, Berkeley / City of Palo Alto
Mary Kate Stimmler is a social scientist whose work combines organizational behavior, data analytics, and ethics. After completing her PhD in Organizational Behavior from UC Berkeley, she spent over a decade on Google's People Analytics team. There, she conducted research on managers, leaders, and teams aimed at improving organizational effectiveness, with findings that were frequently cited in the popular press. Today, her work spans multiple domains: she runs a consulting practice focused on organizational culture, teaches Data Ethics at UC Berkeley, and serves as a Human Relations Commissioner for the City of Palo Alto.
As a practitioner fellow at CASBS, Stimmler’s goal is to help other fellows bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice using AI and social media. A central component of her fellowship involves adapting her data ethics curriculum into a practical framework for professionals who are making decisions about workplace policy and programs. As a Commissioner, she also hopes to connect the interdisciplinary expertise of the CASBS community with the policy challenges facing local government.
