James Goldgeier

During his fellowship year at CASBS, Jim Goldgeier will focus on U.S. foreign policy and great power competition since the end of the Cold War. With two colleagues from Stanford, he is co-leading a multi-author project on great power competition that develops a framework for measuring the impact of military, economic, diplomatic, and ideational instruments of influence that the modern great powers use when seeking to shape the behavior of target countries around the world. Building on previous books he has written on the 1990s, he is writing a book that seeks to explain the dramatic changes in U.S. foreign policy from 1989 to the present.

Goldgeier is professor emeritus of international relations at the School of International Service at American University, where he served as dean from 2011-17. He is a research affiliate at the Center for International Security and Cooperation and at the Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, both at Stanford University, and he is a non-resident fellow at the Kennan Institute. Goldgeier is a senior adviser to Bridging the Gap and co-editor for the Oxford University Press Bridging the Gap book series. He has authored or edited six books, most recently Evaluating NATO Enlargement: From Cold War Victory to the Russia-Ukraine War (co-edited with Joshua R. Itzkowitz Shifrinson) (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) and Foreign Policy Careers for PhDs: A Practical Guide to a World of Possibilities (co-authored with Tamara Cofman Wittes) (Georgetown University Press, 2023). He is president-elect of the International Studies Association.
