Milena Tsvetkova

Milena Tsvetkova will use her fellowship at CASBS to write a popular science book, Socius ex Machina: A Common Future for Humans and Intelligent Machines. The book presents intelligent machines such as robots, bots, and AI algorithms as social actors on par with humans and outlines the challenges and promises of a new hybrid society where humans and machines compete, communicate, coordinate, and cooperate with each other in financial markets, on the road, on the battlefield, in the office, and at home. The book is part of HUMANET, a five-year empirical research project supported by the European Research Council.

Tsvetkova is associate professor of computational social science at the department of methodology at the London School of Economics and political science and external faculty at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna, Austria. She holds a PhD in sociology from Cornell University. Her research combines online experiments, network analysis, machine learning, and computational modeling to study cooperation, contagion, segregation, and inequality in human and human-machine groups, networks, and communities. Tsvetkova’s work has been published in sociology, computer science, and general science journals and recognized with the Raymond Boudon Award for Early Career Achievement by the European Academy of Sociology.
