Corey Abramson

At CASBS, Corey M. Abramson will complete Unequal Anatomies (Oxford University Press), based on two decades of fieldwork in homes, cancer clinics, dementia care facilities, and urban neighborhoods. The book shows how health and illness transmit inequality and shape life chances. Abramson authored The End Game (Harvard University Press, 2015), an award-winning ethnography on later life. The New York Times featured it, and Abramson’s companion essay appeared in The Atlantic. With Neil Gong, he co-edited Beyond the Case (Oxford University Press, 2020). Recent work appears in Annual Review of Sociology and American Sociological Review.

Abramson is professor of sociology and Data Science faculty at Rice University, where he co-directs the Center for Computational Insights on Inequality and Society (CIISR) and leads the Computational Ethnography Lab. His research charts mechanisms connecting inequality, health, and culture over the life course, using ethnography, in-depth interviews, and surveys alongside computational social science (machine learning, natural language processing, and AI) to scale transparent, reproducible analysis while preserving local context. He is data architect for the National Dementia Workforce Study's qualitative arm (2,000+ interviews) and other NIH- and PCORI-funded studies. He taught at the 2026 CASBS Summer Institute on AI Methods for Social Scientists and serves on the editorial board of Sociological Methodology. He has advised the National Academy of Medicine and the European Research Council's GENDHI project. Abramson received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
