Elena Esposito
Fellowship year
2025-26 - Bielefeld University
During her time at CASBS, Elena Esposito will be working on a book on the general theory and practice of prediction in digital society that will be the conclusive result of the project she has been directing in the last years (PREDICT). The book will be based on the findings of a set of theory-driven empirical studies on the consequences of the difference between algorithmic prediction and statistics-driven predictions in three social areas: personalized insurance, precision medicine and predictive policing. The leading assumption of the project is that algorithmic individual forecasting risks undermining the collective management of shared uncertainty that relies on probabilistic average predictions.
Esposito is professor of sociology at Bielefeld University and the University of Bologna. Her work combines a background in philosophy and semiotics with the approach of sociological systems theory. She has published extensively on the theory of society, media theory, fashion, memory and the sociology of financial markets.
