Juliana Bidadanure

While at CASBS, Juliana Uhuru Bidadanure will work on a new book project on relational equality, tentatively titled The Relations That Make Us Unequal. The book will present analyses of inegalitarian modes of relating—including infantilization, demonization, animalization, objectification, and trashification—and derive from them a positive account of what “relating as equals” entails. The project aims to both advance contemporary egalitarian theory and provide new tools for studying and measuring inequality.  

Bidadanure studies what grounds our commitment to equality, diagnoses unjust inequalities, and considers policies to remedy them. She is the author of Justice Across Ages: Treating Young and Old as Equals (OUP, 2021), which develops a theory of age-group justice and examines its implications for employment, social protection, and political representation. 

Bidadanure is a moral and political philosopher whose research focuses on social inequality and the normative foundations of public policy. She is currently an associate professor of philosophy and affiliated faculty of law at New York University. She joined NYU in 2023 from Stanford University, where she was an assistant professor of philosophy since 2015. At Stanford, Bidadanure founded and served as faculty director of the Stanford Basic Income Lab, an interdisciplinary research center that brings together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to study the politics, economics, and philosophy of universal basic income.
