2025-26 - Former CEO

Maya Altman is proud of her more than three decades in public service. She led the Health Plan of San Mateo (HPSM), a local public and government-sponsored Medicaid Managed Care Plan, for nearly 17 years. Before that, she worked in local government, again mostly focused on health care.

Altman initiated several innovative programs at HPSM: helping individuals living in nursing homes find housing and return to their communities; improving services for the families of children with severe illnesses or disabilities; and enhancing the wellbeing, health, and experiences of individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. In 2019, Governor Newsom appointed her to the Stakeholder Advisory Committee for the Master Plan for Aging. Maya has also been active in other state and federal health policy forums.

Altman is hoping to reflect more deeply on her past work, especially efforts to improve broader health and well being and Medicaid. She also wants to explore further her interests in aging and the role of community organizations and local institutions and leaders in driving change.

She earned a BA in Political Science at Bryn Mawr College and received a Master of Public Policy Degree from UC Berkeley. Altman is a practitioner fellow at CASBS.
