Margaret Levi

Margaret Levi (CASBS fellow, 1993-94) is the Sara Miller McCune Director of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) at Stanford and Professor of Political Science, Stanford University, and Jere L. Bacharach Professor Emerita of International Studies in the Department of Political Science at the University of Washington. She became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow in 2002, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2015. She served as president of the American Political Science Association from 2004 to 2005. In 2014 she received the William H. Riker Prize in Political Science.

Sally Schroeder

Sally Schroeder is Associate Director, overseeing the administration, budget, operations and fellows program. Schroeder joined the staff in 2013. At Stanford University since 1989, her previous positions include Deputy Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program, Deputy Director of the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, and Assistant Director at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Schroeder has a Bachelor's degree in business administration from Dana College in Nebraska.

Mike Gaetani

As Communications Director, Mike Gaetani spearheads efforts to promote the Center’s fellows, initiatives, events, accomplishments, and overall vision and mission. Prior to joining CASBS he served as a communications manager for the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California (USC). He held previous communications positions with UCLA’s Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science as well as the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. His education background involves social science research, having earned a M.A. in international relations from USC and completed doctoral course work in political science at UCLA. Originally from the Boston area, Mike is a genetically-committed, obsessive Red Sox fan.

Susan C. Hansen

Susan Hansen is Development Director.  She manages major gifts, the annual fund, and stewardship, and supports the board of directors.  Prior to joining the Center in 2012, Hansen held various positions related to development at Stanford for over 30 years.  She started in the libraries; managed a joint program between the business and engineering schools in manufacturing systems; and was director of corporate relations in the School of Engineering.  Hansen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mills College.  She has a strong interest in gardening, and is a backyard beekeeper.

Sarah Wert

Sarah Wert is the Program Director. She works to develop group research projects at CASBS—research networks and projects, workshops, and special meetings—and fellowships that support interdisciplinary groups of scholars working on important societal or scientific advances. Prior to joining the Center in 2015, Wert held academic positions as a research scientist and assistant professor. She holds a PhD in social psychology from Yale University. Her strong interest is in finding ways to get quality social science into the hands of people who can use it to improve lives.

Drina Adams

Drina Adams is the Finance Associate.  Adams has been with the Center since 2010 and works to provide financial assistance to staff and fellows. Prior to joining CASBS, Adams spent 19 years in several administrative roles with Stanford Property Administration under the Controller’s Office. Adams holds a BS in business management from University of Phoenix. In her spare time she enjoys decorating and traveling to Panama with family.

Megan Deason

Megan Deason joined the Center in 2014 as an Administrative Associate. In this capacity she provides administrative support to the Director, Associate Director, and Development Director. She came to CASBS from San Jose State University, where she worked for six years as an Academic Assistant for the International Gateways program. In her free time she likes to write and sew handbags.

Christy Duignan
Special Initiatives Program Manager

Christy Duignan is the Special Initiatives Program Manager, which entails organizing all of the Center’s workshops and social gatherings along with the symposia and other special events. Duignan joined the staff in 1996. She enjoys snow boarding, hiking and golfing in her spare time.

Amanda Edwards

Amanda Edwards is the Fellowship Program Coordinator. She entered this position in 2017, coming from a varied background of both academia and different roles in the workforce. Her role at CASBS centers around coordinating all phases of the fellowship process, and aiding in administering the program. She has studied Biological Anthropology and Religious Studies in her undergraduate career at UC San Diego, and holds an MA in Anthropology from UC Riverside. Her favorite topics of conversation include non-human primates, travel, and ways that social science can make the world a better place.

Jason Gonzalez

Jason Gonzales is the Information Manager, joining the staff in 2015. In this role, he provides library services to the fellows and staff which includes retrieving materials from the Stanford library system, as well as fulfilling research requests on specified topics. He also maintains the Ruth H. and John G. Neukom Reading Room at CASBS, including the Ralph W. Tyler collection, the accumulated works of CASBS fellows. He earned an MLIS at San Jose State University and previously worked as a copywriter and editor in pharmaceutical marketing, a position he accidentally entered as the result of his research background. When he is not doing research and collection management, he spends much of his time playing drums and recording music.

Phil Main
Facilities Coordinator

Phil Main is the Facilities Coordinator, overseeing the maintenance and repair of the facilities and equipment, as well as the safe operation of the entire Center site. Prior to joining the staff in 2013, Main owned and operated a remodel business from 1999 to 2011. During that time he remodeled many kitchens and bathrooms in and around the Silicon Valley.

Barbie Mayock

Barbie Mayock is the Dining Program Coordinator and oversees the dining program for fellows. Mayock joined the staff in 2014, and prior to working at the Center she was employed for 20 years at The Napkin Ring Catering, Inc.  A native Californian, she has been in the restaurant and catering field for more than 35 years.

Angela Schroeder is the Finance and Research Analyst, joining the staff in 2015. She is responsible for financial management and sponsored project administration. Schroeder has significant experience in analyzing financial data, budgeting, forecasting, and creating financial reports in her past work capacities at an investment bank, a CPA firm, and an internet communications firm. She holds a BS in finance and business economics from the University of Southern California. In her free time she loves to spend time with her family and study dance.

Ravi Shivanna

Ravi Shivanna is a Technical Support Specialist and has worked at the Center since 2005. In this role he provides computer and IT support to staff and fellows. Shivanna started his engineering career as an electronics test engineer at a startup in the 1990’s where he took on the network administration and Oracle database administration and programming responsibilities. He eventually moved on to Fairchild Semiconductor as Senior Programmer Analyst.

Darin Spelber

Darin Spelber is the Library Assistant, joining the staff in 2017. Her role entails processing library material requests from the fellows, retrieving books from the various libraries on campus, and communicating with fellows about their requests and information needs. Darin earned an MA in English from NYU in 2004 and an MLIS from the University of North Texas in 2010. She moved to the Bay Area from Texas in 2015 with her family. She loves literature, music, vegetarian cooking, and basking in the warm California sun.

Iris Wilson

Iris Wilson is an Administrative Associate and staffs the front desk. She has been with the Center for 15 years. Before joining the CASBS family, Wilson worked as a civilian in the Instructional Materials Library of the Fleet Aviation Specialized Operational Training Group Pacific Fleet (FASOTRAGRUPAC), Department of the Navy at Moffett Field, California. She enjoys movies, plays, ballet, and spending time with her daughter, Sierra, and her toy poodle, Nala.

Bruce Young
Information Technology Manager

Bruce Young is the Information Technology Manager, responsible for end-user support and the overall hardware, software and networking needs of the Center. He joined the staff in 2017. He has a BA in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a MS in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University.
